2009 SPE President Visits New Delhi Section
Society of Petroleum Engineers Special Address at New Delhi Section
2009 SPE President Dr. Leo Roodhart,Shell International
Venue: Desire, Le Meridien
Date: Friday 6, 2009
Abstract:
Professional societies supply a forum for like-minded individuals in which an exchange of ideas and information can take place. Joining a professional society, such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), is beneficial for engineers, geologists, and other professionals throughout their entire careers.
Besides keeping up with emerging technology, professional societies offer members the opportunity to establish contacts with other operating and service companies with whom they can share experiences and seek advice, not to mention building friendships with people who share common goals, concerns, and perspectives. Professional societies contain a veritable wealth of information available through conferences, meetings, online, publications, and presentations.
Members may also publish papers to establish individual reputation and to stimulate discussion on topics of importance to the industry. Bottom line, professional societies allows members to excel in their performance and optimize profits for their employers and clients making membership a win-win situation for everyone.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers is the largest of all Oil and gas related societies and growing rapidly on a Global scale. With over 80,000 members worldwide, of which over 50% are now outside the U.S., the Society is the E&P industry’s “power-house of knowledge”.
SPE’s long range plan, which is redrawn every five years, was completed two years ago. The plan is based on the facts that by 2030, worldwide energy demand will be almost 40% greater than today. In order to achieve this growth, over $20 trillion of global investment has been forecasted for next 20 years, of which a large fraction will be in technology development. Also the expectation is that 80% of world energy need till 2030 will continue to be met by fossil fuels. Challenges were identified, such as how do we attract the best and the brightest young people to the industry and, how can we do better in adapting to local industry needs and cultures in every corner of the world.
SPE’s long-range plan can be summarized as follows: • Grow membership in Russia, CIS/Central Asia, India and China • Identify regional needs, language, conferences etc. and implement those needs • Put new technology topics on the meetings calendar: Unconventional oil/gas; Carbon Capture, arctic etc. • Help members to innovate • Engage National Oil Companies
In 10- 20 years time, the Oil Industry as we know it, will not be the same. However, SPE and its members will be ready to face the challenge and help the industry enter a new era.

Sara reminds to prepare for the future
Talk by Sara Thomas on January 16, 2006 under the aegis of SPE, New Delhi section, was just short of reminder to organizations involved in upstream business in India. What emerged from the discussion – Chemical EOR may be finally out of the laboratory, otherwise struggling to get a foothold against the high cost involved. Largely due to the rising cost of fuel, stage may be set for attempting ultimate recovery of whatever is left inside the reservoir and there is lot left (two trillion barrels!). It is indeed a time to run down the financials for EOR schemes again.
